New Plant Items
All of our new and some  reintroduced plant introductions not listed in our 2009 catalogue

As part of our continued expansion plans we look for exciting new plants on a regular basis, all of these new items are consolidated each year into our annual catalogue but we like to integrate them into our Web Site as soon as stocks become available. Although these new plants appear within each category, to easily identify them the following is a complete list of all items not in the current catalogue. Many are derived from seed trials and subsequent plant availability, others from propagation and some directly imported from abroad or sourced within the UK.

Hardy Abutilon 1 litre plants җ җ

Like Suntense, Vitifolium is hardy in most parts of the country given a sheltered position. It makes a large shrub to small tree status if not lightly pruned after flowering. The large exotic white flowers with a golden centre are up to 3" across and carried in bunches all over the tree in late spring. A spectacular shrub and easy to grow.

Hardy Abutilon 1 litre plantsҗ җ

A hardy garden hybrid Abutilon capable of tolerating at least -12°C that makes a fantastic display in spring with large 3" lilac blue flowers. Grows tall if not gently pruned each year but in any case it is not a long lived shrub - perhaps 10 years or so but well worth the effort.

Dendroseris litoralis

!
Cabbage Tree (Very Rare) 3 litre Plants

This unusual plant comes from a small, isolated group of islands 400 miles off the coast of Chile with temperatures typically 10C to 25C.  At one point there were only 3 plants left in the late 1980s, and today it is still critically endangered.  It is usually only found in botanical gardens, making it one of the rarest plants in cultivation. If you can provide the right conditions, it will be an exciting plant to grow.

It is an evergreen, perennial species in the daisy and sunflower family.  It's unusual in that it has woody, tree-like stems, and rubbery, tennis racket-sized edible leaves (hence the common name) up to 18" long. It grows to about 6ft if pot grown in cool conservatory or greenhouse conditions kept frost free.

Hedychium Tropic Bird

Tom Wood Hybrid Ginger 1 litre plant
A short 2ft tall Ginger with a spicy fragrance that likes to flower from Sep to Feb so useful as a conservatory plant if you can maintain a minimum of 8C. The free-blooming flower spikes have bracts covered with golden hairs and waxy white to cream flowers that curve backwards and last for 4-5 days.

Hibiscus mutabalis

!
Confederate Rose or Cotton Rosemallow 1 litre Plants
A large shrub or small multistemmed tree that grows to 15 ft in a warm climate and a native of China. Hibiscus mutabilis will need a warm glasshouse in the UK to over winter but is spectacular when in full bloom starting in late summer and on into autumn. The flowers open pure white and change colour over a three-day period until they are deep pink. The most notable characteristic of this flowering shrub is that flowers of three distinct colours appear on the bush simultaneously as the blooms colour cycle independent of one another. There is always great demand in USA garden centers for the Confederate Rose when it is in full bloom, for it is one of the most imposing and unusual of flowering trees.

Ipomoea carnea

JP2825
!
Bush Morning Glory 1 litre plants
A large leafed tropical bush version of Ipomoea seen throughout the Caribbean. Grows quickly to over 6ft as a bush and should be useful in this country as a large annual for summer bedding or for conservatory use. The large pink flowers are a classic morning glory type fading to pale pink by the late afternoon  as they close. Flowers produced in dense clusters making a great show if given enough sun.

Maranta arundinacea

!
Arrowroot 1 litre plants
One for the heated conservatory where it will make a handsome foliage plant. Maranta arundinacea, is cultivated commercially for its starch-storing rhizome.  Because this very nutritious starch is so readily digested, it is often fed to infants, invalids, and those allergic to wheat. The name arrowroot derives from its past medicinal use as a poultice to remove arrow poison from wounds. So if you come home from a bad day at work with poisoned arrows in your back this is just what you need!
